1959 440 IC Engine

Post by Crawly » Mon Dec 30, 2019 2:35 pm

Spun a rod bearing or two on my 440IC...

Rod and cap journals will need cleaned up, crank turned, and while in there, I’d say maybe cylinders bored and all that jazz.

Had a local place quote me a running engine for $1750.

Anyone got perspective on what I’d be looking at rebuild cost wise vs. just buying the used engine...?

Thanks
Crawly

My first comment is you have a used engine, why buy another one. It may be no different than yours, just hasn't spun the bearings yet.
My rough rule of thumb is $800 parts, $600 machining for a top to bottom correct rebuild. Does not include externals, on engine parts.
No piston available at this moment, but they are in process.

Lavoy, appreciate the comment, makes sense. Thanks for the ballpark numbers too - helps me get feel for costs.

Rebuild yours, trust me, you won't believe the difference. I do mean rebuild, not hone and ring job.

Yep that’s the direction I’m going to head...looking for engine shops in town. Will start getting everything lined up and jump in....I’m pumped

If you need parts, let me know. I have some in stock, everything else is available except for pistons right now.

Yes, done several, have one sitting here now from Alaska to rebuild. There are no pistons currently available, so it would be later this spring I am guessing before I could do one. Also, I do not do overhauls, I only do rebuilds, bored, crank turned, head rebuilt, etc.
