420 shift lever tower repair

Post by ggfossen » Sun Dec 10, 2006 5:10 pm

A short time ago, Lavoy suggested some things that I might do to fix the problem of the 420 sticking in gear. For the shift lever tower, new pin, new bushing/bearing, and 2 (not just one) retaining rings. I also installed a new boot, and a new knob. All current from Deere, and something over 50 bucks. I had to weld up, and grind down, the slot in the side of the shift lever ball.

It all made a tremendous improvement in the shifting.

On a cautionary note, they quoted a price of about $335 for the shift lever. After that, I was much more gentle with it.
