broken bolt 440 steering clutch collar

Post by smitty906 » Thu Feb 20, 2020 5:09 pm

First time post here , just picked up a 440 with the 602 blade last summer , finally got time to get it in the shop
and replace left side rollers , idler , and tensioner . Figured I would adjust the left steering clutch as it would not steer and
when loosening the throwout bearing collar bolt......it snapped off flush. Has anyone ever encountered this before , I cannot think of another
way to get the bolt out other than removal and tear down of the final.

I don’t know of any other way to repair that broken bolt. That is why I always put grade 8 bolts, and use neverseize upon assembly, of any bolted together piece. Grade 5 twist off to easy. Good luck!

That bolt is a special bolt, you can not replace it with any common bolt without causing other damage. If it was rusted in that bad, most likely the throwout bearing holder is rusted into the casting as well. Only fix is tear down, but then while you are in there, you can look at everything else.

well just so you folks know...that is exactly what had happened shortly after i worked mine (jd440ic) a bit...i was able to get in there and drill into it and get rest of bolt out...very carefully!!...had another throwout with the bolt proper and replaced it (bolt).....worked o.k til my brake band itself actually broke in half....when disassembled i found out i had actually went thru the tube...yet the clutch worked fine!.
all is well now with the fine parts i got from Lavoy!!!
