reverser

Post by my fathers son » Mon Mar 02, 2020 7:36 pm

Have a ’58 420 and the reverser jumps out under heavy load. I would think this topic would have been discussed at some point but I can’t find anything d using reverser, reverser jumps out or pops out. How ‘bout a hint? Thanks

The 420 has a direct gear reverser, I believe. Sometimes operators don't use the clutch and stop the machine before utilizing the reverser and that causes the rounding of the gears causing it to jump/slip out of gear. I think the 1010 was JD's first model to use a hydraulic reverser which could be used without a clutch.

Depending on serial number, you could have a gear type or a clutch type reverser. If it pops out of gear, I am guessing you have the gear type, which has the shifter on the RH side of the crawler.
What Greg already mentioned is a possibility, as well as worn bearings, detent ball or spring issues, as well as maybe some other stuff. Regardless, only fix is a tear down, and if you keep running like it is, you will be looking at replacing some damaged parts that right now may not be damaged.
I keep all of the bearings and seals in stock, and now have reproduction gaskets for them as well.
