Post by Fredquebec » Mon Apr 06, 2020 1:21 pm

Ok seems a did a really good job in reajusting the steering clutch. So much better grip that i exploded the final drive housing on me first real pull of a large tree 😔😔 so which is better 40c or 420c housing?

Not really a simple answer here. Early 40 case does not interchange at all. Later 40 and early 420 are the same case, late 420 is the "heavier" case. In terms of exploding a final drive, there was an underlying problem that caused it, it was not a function of the case itself. It is not possible to load a final drive that is in otherwise good condition to the point that you can blow it up. They are designed from the factory to take 100% power in 1st gear to the limit of traction or to the point that traction exceeds a certain point, and then the crossbar cushions will crush enough to jam the sprocket into the track stop and kill the engine or slip the steering clutch.
If you have 40, I would rebuild a 40 final and put it on and never look back.

You are not going to be proud of me. I had to remove the right stop bracket to reinstall the track housing on the bull. One of the bolt holding it broke. I was too eager to try it and didnt tought it would make that much difference if it wasnt there for my little ride 😔😔 i will install it back with the new housing. I have a 4 roller 40c with no vin plate so unshure of the year.

My 4 roller 40c has two different final drive housings on it, one is heavily gusseted and one isn't. I would assume the one with the gussets is a later model 420 that was swapped in. In comparing the two the gusseted one looks much more stout.

Yes, the gusseted final is the late 420 final drive housing.

According to my 40c parts manual, the M2361T is on the later 40c, serial 62264-up. Other part/casting numbers listed for this machine are AM3368T, M3687T, AM2132T and AM3225T. I assume these are all variations of the same hosing. The early 40 lists part/casting numbers AM909T, M938T and AM1002T. I am not clear on how JD distinguishes between part # and casting # but maybe someone can clarify.

Casting numbers may or may not relate to part numbers, all they do is give you a headache.

Hi,

Casting Numbers are just that. They tell the operator of the next step, usually machining, which casting it is so they perform the correct next step. Once the steps are complete, it gets a Part Number. Sometimes a casting gets used in multiple applications and so get different steps and so different part numbers.

Then casting numbers will definitely lead to headaches!
