My 2010JD 1962 model crawler

Post by royboy » Sat Apr 11, 2020 7:48 am

Good morning...
My crawler has not been running for a year or so... I start it every month or so to keep the engine good... finally took the time to jack it up and see
what was happening.. the right track does not move at all.. left goes forward and reverse...
My questions are... ( I am not a mechanic)
Is this old of a machine worth working on??
If I do can I get parts??
Is this too big of a job for me to tackle??? (I have a friend who is a mechanic … he said he would help)
Where do I start ??? (Took the seat off yesterday and put WD 40 on all the nuts and bolts....)

Thanks for any help...
Have a great day and a Blessed Easter!!!!

Worth is in the eye of the beholder so to speak, depends on what you want it for, what your end goal is, what your dollar tolerance is. As a general rule when I'm asked about worth or selling price, and my standard answer is no, it isn't worth it. Keep in mind I look at crawlers from a substantially different angle than maybe some.
I have all of the parts available for the steering clutches.

The way I look at it is they are a toy that can also make or save you money. Can't say that about boats, snowmobiles, motorcycles, etc.

Just my 2 cents worth. I have a 40c that I "'rescued" from under an apple tree. Engine was frozen, one rear axle gear missing, and lots of little stuff wrong or missing. It now runs and pulls logs that I cut clearing a bit of land between my house and the river to improve the view. I probably could have hired someone to pull out the logs for a small fraction of what I have in this old girl and I could probably only recover 1/2 my investment if I sold it but I had the fun (and frustration) of bringing a used and abused machine back to life and seeing the grin on peoples faces when the 2 cyl comes to life. One of my grandsons is now looking for something similar to work on. He works in the woods and just bought, repaired and sold an old skidder. Figures he's ready for a JD crawler next. Priceless!
have 40c 4 roller crawler, 1927 Ford T Touring car, 1931 Ford A Roadster, 1951 Standard Vanguard Saloon. Never a dull moment!

if you have ever worked on an automobile or tractor you can work on your machine, it is not rocket science , you can and will get help from this site, that is exactly what happens here.
major issue is having a solid floor and a way to pick up heavy objects...the steering clutch assembly are heavy and a helper is always welcome, read everything pertinent to your project on this site, search engine helps, and then you can make decision.
do you have your books for reference? important to have!

very first things to read up on how to adjust the steering brakes, follow procedure exactly and you can then determine if clutch needs replacing..adjustment is critical...look for oils rust mouse nests etc in brake area...if oils on ,discs probably need replacing and need to find where coming from..shaft seal?

i have 1954 wheeled jd40s and 1960 jd440 working great and YES they are worth the effort!

First order of business is a parts and service manual, wouldn't even start til you have them in hand.

in regards to adding pics to posts,
you must register with Lavoy, you need to advise him your chosen login and password for the pic server site, instructions on uploading are in the Q&A Forum at the bottom of the board index, which only becomes visible when you login to the crawler site.

Good day crawler Fans…
After a year of silence I have now got the dozer taken apart and looking for a final drive and pinion gear.. for my 1962 John Deere 2010 crawler… if sitting on the dozer it would be the final drive on the right hand side…
Any ideas???
Thank you much and have a great day..
Roy Boy!!!!!

I should have a bull gear on hand, I am out of pinion shafts, but I believe a buddy of mine has one.
