hello I am looking for some help with timeing on 165 cid diesel. confused about crank to cam timeing. book said line up dots did that. put all togather to find out its out of time. oil pump and injector timeing seems ok. how can I tell if I am on right stroke before I put it all back togather again

tho basically you can check to see which valves are open on the number 1 cylinder, believe both should be closed.

You didn't say, but it sounds like you might be doing an engine overhaul and had the engine completely apart. Short answer to your question is to check the valve/lifter position compared to piston position on #1 cylinder to see if it is at TDC compression stroke. A longer answer is: You said you lined the dots on the crank and cam gears up, good. To install and time the oil pump you next need to get #1 at top dead center on the compression stroke. It sounds like you might not have done that. I'm not sure on that engine, but on many engines just because the cam and crank dots line up, it doesn't mean #1 piston is at TDC on compression. With the cam and crank marks lined up, you need to turn (turn the engine the same way the it turns when it is running) the crank to get #1 piston to TDC compression. When #1 is TDC on compression the lifters (tappets) will be at the lowest point on both of the #1 cam lobes. That would be the lifter position for the valves to be closed on #1 cylinder for the power (fire) stroke. At that time #4 piston will also be at TDC, but it will be on its exhaust stroke. The lifters for #4 cylinder will be "on the rock", meaning the exhaust is just completing closing and the intake is just starting to open for #4's intake stroke. HTH

Jim B did a good job explaining the process. One more thing, I think the book might say is, when rolling the engine over in the same direction as it runs, if you go passed tdc, don't turn it back to get there. You should turn it around again, the same way to achieve tdc.
