Safety Block - Tracks Seizing

Post by Jabes » Fri May 01, 2020 2:03 pm

I have a JD crawler, I think the year is 1954. While plowing this winter, the tracks suddenly seized. Ever since it can be moved forward or backward about 8 feet, but at that point the left tracks lock. At closer inspection, a chunk of wood was found lodged in the groove of the front wheel (or whatever it's called). After removing that piece of wood, the tracks still seize. It's possible the wood was never the cause of the issue, but if it was, is there a mechanism in the safety block that engaged and now needs to be disengaged in order for the tracks to move again? If so, how do I do that? Everything has been hosed down and cleaned and the problem persists. Please help!

Maybe drain left hand final drive and see if there is any chunks of metal come out. Have a low walled drain pan that will hold about 1 gallon. Not sure how much oil for sure, but 1 gal is close. Maybe drain right also( in a separate pan) so you can see each and keep them separate.

You have a mechanical issue some place. I would quit using it til I determined what the problem is. There are some spendy items there that get broke if something is wrong.

Can you get that side in the air? If so, try spinning that track without a load, slowly. If it binds, as Lavoy says, there is something broken, and if forced, more money and time will be needed. Breaking the track, and pulling a final is not that hard, Good luck.

By spinning, I mean barring over in neutral to see what happens. Good luck.
