Post by Weekendcooker » Thu Jun 04, 2020 4:11 pm

Howdy folks , i have a question about my oil filter on my 420 crawler , someone before me switched it to a spin on like a car oil filter and its so old there are no markings on it , anyway to find out what size it takes , ive already taken it to the auto parts store and tried to have them help figure this out with no happy ending !

Hopefully someone has seen one like yours. Lavoy or Stan might have seen such. Is it an adapter in the original housing base or did they remove the original base from the block and bolt a different base on the block?

You need to identify the threads in your filter. Try SAE and metric bolts. 3/4-16 and 13/16-16 are a couple common sizes.

Measure gasket ID and OD. Measure thickness. With the thread size and gasket info you will need to start comparing to filter info in catalogs.. The original element had a micron rating of 10 microns which you need to match as well.

You might want to consider changing it back to original. Just a thought.

Hi,

First thing I would look at is a Number One filter from a Ford. They usually have a number one in most filter makers part numbers, which is why I call them that. They were the most common adapted filters. I used them on my racing cars as I liked remote mounted filters. I have even used them on motorcycle engines, such as in the Legends Cars.

I thought maybe there was a conversion kit made for these and somebody might know what size the spin on filter would be.

It looks like an adaptor in the original housing.
