Bought another 1010

Post by Keith-OR » Tue Jun 23, 2020 8:25 pm

So what is the pit falls of this crawler. It is diesel, i was told owner thinks that the head gasket is blown. It seems to be in a lot better shape than my gas 1010. Going to bring it home Thursday, 325 miles one way to get it.

Biggest downfall on the diesel 1010, in my opinion, is hard starting. It's not recommended to use starting fluid as it can break the top piston rings. Good idea to use the fuel primer and glow plugs. I think I'd install a block heater if you can reach it with electricity.

Parts availability can be an issue for some 1010 stuff. Keep good glow plugs in it, use them correctly, and they will start in well below freezing temps(not that I normally do that). Engine parts are expensive due to many of them being OEM only. Not a lot of parts for early injectors, but can get some work done to them.

It don't normally get much below freezing here (Banana Belt). I'll put block heater on it and I DO NOT LIKE starting fluid.
Thanks for all the info. I will get back and let everyone know how the crawler runs. Hopefully like owner thinks, it is just a blown head gasket.

thanks

OK Lavoy, I'll be in touch when i get this tractor home and check everything out. I talked to the actual owner this morn, and he said the reason it kept getting hot, was the radiator had a real bad leak. I'll put my radiator on it when I get it home. Also I'll do a pressure test on the cooling system.
I am going to pick it up mon. Planned on this last week, but brakes on my equipment trailer needed lots of attention. I had to replace brakes on one axle. Loaned it out too many times and individuals did not check anything or brought it back broke and didn't inform me!!
Oh well, can't cry over split milk, It is fixed and ready to go.

Took me 2 months to finally get the 1010 that I purchased home. First attempt I burnt (fire) my truck up. I had to get my farm truck road ready, which hadn't been road ready since 2013. Will attempt to start crawler this week.
Post results.
