440IC Engine Clutch Disk - Pressure Plate - Flywheel Condtions....

Post by Crawly » Tue Jul 14, 2020 2:48 pm

Getting the engine rebuilt in my 440IC.

I am wondering what kind of condition the pressure plate surface, flywheel surface, and clutch disk appear to be in. I have no idea when this stuff would of been replaced - could be new, could be old. I hate to replace something that doesn't need to just for the sake of having the engine out but I also understand the rationale of doing it at the same time... thoughts on pics? I hope I inserted them correctly...

If I understand you correctly, you are asking what to do with them? My opinion is they would already be in the scrap dumpster and new parts installed. Engine clutch kit is $300 or less, I'm not pulling an engine again to gamble on what could be a 30 year old part bearing okay because it "looked" good. I can't see spring pressure or whether a who knows how old spring is going to fail with my eyes.

Yes that's more or less my question. Please bear with me as this is the first time I've laid eyes on these kinds of parts, thus I don't have a feel for their state or wear condition. For all I know they have 50 hrs on them or 2,500 hrs...2 years or 30 years :?:

Hi,

Basically, if *you* didn't work on it and replace parts, you will never know what is up. Yes, it might be 2 years old. But, it might be 50 years old. Or, original.

Parts can look good. Parts can measure good. Parts can still go 'sproing!' because of some fault missed.

To be completely fair, brand new parts can also go 'sproing', but the chances are greater the older they are.

Like Clint Eastwood said in Dirty Harry: "Do you feel lucky?"

I don't feel "that lucky"! I'll end up replacing the parts. Just interested in learning about stuff like how to interpret their condition. But, it's worth just replacing them while in there.

Thanks

Clutches are almost impossible to tell unless they truly look like junk. There is no way to determine if the springs are in good shape pressure wise. Hence why I say to replace them if apart.

Don’t keep none of the old clutch parts when replacing?
