John Deere 440 icd advice
Re: John Deere 440 icd advice
ahhh so! i see that be a problem...
gonna take a bit of ingenuity to correct that...and no real room to work with .....sure would be nice to have an "tool" to fit over damaged nuts etc....hmmm how about welding an old nut to the head and using that...something just a size larger would give a bit of additional leverage as well....it takes a bit of pull to break those threads loose from what i remember. let that weld cool a bit to shrink bolt back to size and then try....crescent wrenches do booger, don't recall if can fit impact in that area
do you have crawler raised off the floor for easier access?...i actually drove mine up on 2 thicknessess of planks and raised it off the planks for a bit more clearance, thou am but 140 lbs so fit fairly easily....i then used the box end and another box end for extension and was able to break loose with a bit of pressure.
i simply moved planks out of way when tested the brakes etc to spin the tracks with clearance.

Re: John Deere 440 icd advice
Yes I did. I welded a nut to it and eventually it came out with more penetrating fluid and going back and fourth with it. I think the bolt had a slight bent to it.
I'm located in New Brunswick Canada. Updated my info

Re: John Deere 440 icd advice
thank you...it is always great to hear how things worked out!!!!
Re: John Deere 440 icd advice
Been a while since I have been on so I thought I would update. I have a working machine now after having the cylinder head reconditioned, starter rebuilt, all new steering clutches, and lots of other work. Just wondering where this one has had the reverser gutted and straight shaft put in its place,, does the housing still need oil to lubricate bearings?
Re: John Deere 440 icd advice
i would say yes...believe that shaft is literally driving the machine, as to what oils not sure, would expect that whatever you use as engine oil should be fine, since no clutches are in it now..
Re: John Deere 440 icd advice
IF done correctly, put back together as a non reverser machine would have been built from the factory, then no.

How would one tell if it was done correctly or not?
Re: John Deere 440 icd advice
Look in through the bung plugs with a camera and make sure the rear hub has been removed, and the front bearing removed.
