Size 12 volt battery

I’m going 12 volt on my 440ic, changed the starter to 12 volt already, I’m needing to know what size 12 volt battery do I need to use, the battery base size on the dozer is 9” by 8” I know it was built for a 6 volt battery so hopefully I can get a battery to fit the base. Any ideas?!

There are several 12 volt batteries that will fit in place of a Group 1 six volt battery. Someone will likely be along to let you know what they are using in their 440, in the meantime here is one of many battery charts on line. The group sizes are standard, so size for a group is the same across manufacturers. You can find the sizes/groups that match your needs then compare the CCA and reserve capacity between those groups of batteries when you shop for the battery.

my battery just died yesterday, so went to advance auto...they have recently changed over to die hard batteries....i got 800cca..side mount...not cheap!...182.95...exide 770cca only lasted 3 years and done

Hi,

Yeah. Modern small 12v car batteries are not as rugged inside as the 6v ones. They don't last so well on bouncy crawlers. Makes the flakes on the plates which form from use fall off the thinner plates into the bottom of the battery faster than they do on a car. And, the 12v has less space for it to collect. A combination which leads to earlier battery failure.

Sounds like I might have to make a rubber padding for the bottom to absorb heavy vibration. What do you think?

yes, mine does have a pad underneath, tho seems a bit hard, i may switch out to more f a foam padding that hapn to have for more soc absorbing

The 12 volt battery has been in my 440 for 5 years with no issue. If you have the battery clamped down like it should be so it can't hit the fuel tank when bouncing, any cushion from whatever you put underneath is pretty well negated.
