so wat you are saying...is that you had to turn the oil pump 180 degrees? t get it to fire properly? and not the distributor.

just curious as i too have a jd40 wheeled, tho my dozer is jd440ic

Yes that is correct! so my brother and I restored a 1958 420u recently and all it would do was back fire through the carb not running at all. So we did some research and yes the oil pump needed to be turned 180 degrees. Same with the 420c I just got obviously posted above, however it would run on one cylinder and sometimes backfire through the carb. Our 40 u has never been apart except me taking some parts to try on the 420c. but it would be very similar! Hope that helps!

I know that in your situation, it somehow helped you, but distributor orientation has no effect on spark, it has no idea where it is. I have had more with the distributor in wrong than I can count, never had one misfire.
As far as 12 "volt" cap, it is only a term of reference used by some people to differentiate between the two styles of caps, voltage is irelevant.

It simply was timed 180 degrees off at least thats what it seems to me like.
