Hello, first post on this message board.
Was just given a 1962 jd1010 diesel loader,w/ pin on hoe.
I recall seeing this machine run in 1975 or '76. No proof of it running since then.
Stack was uncovered for many years.
I am planning on the worst, that the original engine is past its use.
I understand this engine is long obsolete, so I am looking for viable swaps, as I won't push a pile of money into this project.
What engine can be fitted without much problem?

Nothing other than another 1010 engine or power unit block from some application that used a 1010 engine.

or.. you could really think outside the box and fashion something like a vid I seen on You Tube where a guy put a flathead 6 Studebaker engine in a 440 Deere dozer... dubbing it "The Studedeere" I have to hand it to the guy.. he did a fantastic job fitting it in there... even with the old 3 spd trans it came with.. imagine if you will.. a 15 spd forward and 5 reverse in a little dozer... innovation at it's best...

"Thinking outside of the box", yea, reminds me of the cat d4 my buddy had with a Buick v6.
I was hoping that the 1010 deere engine had a bell housing pattern that matched up with somethong else.
I have a 2-71 detroit from a parted-out Allis HD 5.
I may try building an adapter.

if you know someone with a plasma CNC you could get them to make you one.... I recently bought one and love it.. been able to fab some very nice pieces and have made piece to fit my recently restored 440 IC..

I have a good-sized plasma, love it, but no cnc.
My formula for adapters is to make two plates that match the bolt patterns of the items you wish to marry.
then you attach the spline coupler, or clutch, or torque converter between the two units.
check for runout between shaft centers (sometimes time-consuming). and then either dowl and bolt the plates, or weld them into one unit.
Most of the above can be avoided if one of the bolt patterns is an SAE standard.

have you determined that you engine is junk, taken it apart? are you wanting to save engine etc???

IT is not just a function of bolt pattern. The starter mount is on the engine, where is it on the replacement engine? What flywheel are you going to use? I guarantee there is no flywheel out there that is designed to take a John Deere isolator disc other than a Deere flywheel. What is the depth of the flywheel, that is critical, more sore if you are going to have to have probably an inch thick adapter plate.
I am not saying that something can not be adapted or cobbled together, but it will be far from easy, far from cheap.

Winter has finally arrived in this part of the country, I will not be doing anything to the 1010 until warmer weather arrives.
I have enough to do with keeping a snow removal fleet operational.
