John deere 420c winch....
John deere 420c winch....
What size of winch would I need for a 420c? i am thinking of pricing an aftermarket winch. I know the machines is roughly 8500 pounds but when its stuck it will need more than an 8500 pound winch.
Re: John deere 420c winch....
If you are looking at an electric winch, a 15,000lb winch will be marginal at best, if it will even do anything on a stuck crawler and exceedingly slow. Even slower when you have to use a snatch block, and then stop for the motor to cool down every 60 seconds or so.
I have a 12,000lb electric on my trailer, and it is very slow just rolling a crawler up the ramp on a deck between trailer, then the battery wears down, and the motor gets hot so you sit there for a while til you can use it again.
If you are comparing electric line pull to one of the rear mounted winches you see on these old crawlers, there is no real comparison as far as rating. If I was to compare, divide an electric by at least 3 vs a Gearmatic and you are close, maybe. Honestly, there really is no comparison, a good 8A or 8G is almost scary as far as capacity if you ever use one. I have skidded a 5 roller 420 with a heavy blade straight sideways at idle and about 4 wraps of cable with an 8A.
If you are talking mechanical drive, I would go at least 10,000lb depending on how much you plan to use it.

Ok, I would like to find a factory but not sure I can afford them! Thank you for those specs!
Re: John deere 420c winch....
They are a little hard to come by, and are expensive to rebuild if done correctly, but once done, never have to do it again.

Re: John deere 420c winch....
The only reason I was thinking about one is because 2 months out of the year this crawler will be going threw a muddy woods, I am just exploring my options. Maybe I won't need it at all but just want my options. thank you!
Re: John deere 420c winch....
pto driven winch is what you want. you can adapt mounting for just about any winch, they're are plenty of them out there once you start looking.
several here in my area, but shipping will eliminate those.
i was going to do this, but in my searching, i actually found a gearmatic 8a on a junked crawler.
if you read thru this forum, you will see crawlers with all kinds of winches fitted

Love my Gearmatic 8a winch. It’s been a challenge to maintain due to my ignorance, but it is a pulling machine. I’ve pulled 36” x 16’ maple logs up hill. Multiple long stems downhill, and helped get myself unstuck using it. A good pairing with my 420.

I have a Carco C-3 on my 40c. It appears to have been a dealer option. The winch is too strong for the machine, pretty sure it would rip it in half if the blade was chained to something solid. I've pulled hitches of wood that outweigh the machine with it may times.
As has been stated, electric is not what you want if you have any thought of working with it. I have a Warn xd9000i on my rock crawler that works fantastic for self recovery, but that only weighs 3500 lbs and even this relatively high end winch doesn't have the duty cycle for logging. I wouldn't think you'd need a winch if you are only worried about getting stuck. Pay attention to where you are going and it's fairly hard to get stuck. If you do the chain a log to the tracks trick is fairly simple.
