John Deere 420c reverser operation question

Post by E.Huffman » Sat Jan 30, 2021 10:15 am

Hi so I am putting my "58" 420 crawler loader back together and I was wondering if I should be able to feel a definite detent type feel when I switch from forward to reverse and vice versa. Currently I can't really feel any. I don't know how it was originally and I don't want to tear it all apart when i get it running! Thanks!

If you have the manual on the reverser for your overhaul, that info and the adjustment procedure should be in it. It should take 25 to 35 pounds of force to "snap" the lever into forward or reverse. If you don't have a manual you can go to https://techpubs.deere.com/ and get a free copy of the 430 operator's manual which has the instructions for the wet clutch reverser adjustment in it. Get to that home page, click on the Equipment Publications box. When that page opens enter 430 in the Model search box then click the search icon. You should 3 pages of results. Go to the 2nd page and click on the first 430 - Tractors - Base Units - North America line and a drop down should open. You should see the option to select a download of the manual OMT60558 430 Crawler Tractor (140001-). Page 52 starts the adjustment info on the reverser. What I have posted are the steps I use and how it opens for me. If the first 430 tractor comes up different for you you just need to open the ours and find that manual number. JD Agricultural Bookstore has made the Operator's manuals, for some of the older models, such as this one, free to download. If a manual is not a free download you will see the a price where this one says "Download" and you have to pay before accessing those.

Thanks But I guess my bigger question is... Should it snap into both positions?

If it is too tight it won't snap in either.

Got it thanks! I just got it to snap! It really felt like something was not right inside but feels better now.
