Post by davea » Sun Jan 07, 2007 8:02 am

I have a 420 with an inside the frame blade.I need new packings and seals for the cylinders. Are these available from Deere?I have had a shop make them in the past and they did not hold up very good.Looking for something better.

I cannot guarantee that they have all packing kits for all the cylinders we may run in to on these, but they have AU 11990 which fits the lifting cylinders on many of the JD blades from that era.
I think I paid around $45 each. I repacked one for the first time and it stopped the leak.
The Industrial JD shop quoted me 3 - 4 hours of shop time at $75 per hour. I am not sure what all they were planning on doing in 3 - 4 hours, I repacked mine in about 90 minutes using regular shop tools.
Sorry to diss the JD shop but absurd is absurd, no matter who you are.
The only hard part is getting the rod end nut loose. They can be a bear. Whatever you do, do not put the ram in anything that will scratch it, or you will have bigger issues. A strap wrench is designed to hold the ram while you get the nut loose and will not harm the ram when it is attached properly. That is what I used and it worked like a champ.
