John Deere 440IC Reverser
Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
I assume you mean the axle? There is no normal, it takes as many as it takes. Depends on wear, new bearings or used, spacer has spun on the axle, etc.

I put new bearings in and according to my measurements I would need around .125” to be close and that doesn’t seem right.

Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
Should I check the spacer or just add more shims? Also with that much wear would it be better to add a washer to the spacer rather than shim the bearing?

Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
That is well above what I would call normal, but I have seen them that bad in the past. Are you missing the washer under the inboard bearing?

Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
No washer. That’s probably the 1/8” I’m missing. I’m not sure if it was where there. I’ll remove the bull gear cover tomorrow and make sure it didn’t drop down in. This drive also didn’t have any shims when I tore it apart. Someone has been here before.

Washer is somewhere past .125 thick.

Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
So I got the old dozer out the other day for the first time this year, I was going forward when all of the sudden it stalled out. It will not move with the reverser lever in the forward position. With the transmission in neutral when I let the main clutch out the engine will stall with the reverser lever in the forward or in between position. Last year I removed the transmission and replaced the input shaft bearings. I did not have the reverser out when I replaced the bearings. The dozer has been used very little since replacing the bearing and oil has been at the proper level and of good quality in the transmission. I am led to believe that the reverse clutches are not releasing. I backed the adjustment off of the reverse clutches thinking maybe there was not enough free play but that didn’t help. I haven’t been using the reverser at all, just left it in forward and used the transmission reverse. Is there anything I can try to correct this issue without removing the reverser? Any ideas or suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Thanks

Guessing something is locked up in the reverser "differential", or something is broken. Only fix is tear down.
