Valve spring compression weight 440ic

Post by lienjohn » Fri Apr 16, 2021 8:07 am

Hi Folks,

I'm having the head of my 440ic worked on. I purchased new valve springs. The manual says the compression weight for springs should be 39 lbs at 2 inches? (If I remember correctly, I left the manual at the shop.) The guy rebuilding the head put the spring on his compression measuring tool and the new springs were 25 lbs at 2 inches. I said that is probably ok but he wants to shim the springs to get the measurement closer to 39(?) lbs.

Has anyone had similar experiences? He doesn't want to just install the new springs as is since they won't be to spec.

Are the new springs at 25 lbs good enough? I would think so but I really don't know.

Thanks,
John

I think you are probably correct on the valve spring compression value for your machine.
My 420 manual says 30 lbs at 2 inches, and 62 lbs at 1 5/8 inches.
These do say minimum. I think I would get some other springs, as shimming closes the gap in the coils, and you don't want to bend
a push rod or damage the rockers.
I'm certainly not expert on this, it's just my opinion.
Good luck, Pete
