I need info . I have a 1950 crawler that has a 6 volt starter but a 12 volt alternator. My wonder is Do you hook the battery for a positive ground or for 12 volt negative ground? Any help appreciated. I will be rebuilding the starter and planning on making it 12 volt. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have a MC crawler made from 1949-1952

Serial number 115748 appears to fall between 100001 and 119764 which were the beginning and ending serial numbers for the 1957 420C crawlers. So based on the number you posted, I would say you have a 1957 420C model. On the serial number tag, to the left of the serial number, the Model (Series) number should be stamped into the tag. Is "420 C" stamped there?

Hi,

12v alternator means 12v battery and negative ground.

The starter will spin the correct way positive or negative ground. The alternator will smoke positive ground.

It is good to make the starter 12v before the nose cone breaks.

And to Jim B, it is a 420 C Thanks for that. So I am assuming it is a 1957 Which is a good thing to know when ordering parts.

Well I got it to crank a couple of times then smoke came out of starter. I'm guessing it is fried. What is the best route to go? Rebuild as 6 volt or change it to 12 volt? I'm lost as to next step.

Best bet if you have to remain 12 volts is to rebuild the starter as a 12 volt. I have 12 volt rebuild kits on hand.

So I got the starter rebuilt and it cranks. But as near as I can see it is cranking clockwise turning the motor backwards. HOW do I get it to crank countec clockwise??? Going crazy here LOL

Which way are you facing and what are you looking at? Clockwise looking from the front, the fan turns clockwise. If you are setting in the seat cranking it, looking at the backside of the fan, it will be turning counterclockwise.

Sitting in the seat the fan is turning counter clockwise. So is this accurate?

Standing at the front of the crawler, facing the radiator, the engine would turn clockwise, so I would say counterclockwise from the seat. Put it in first gear, crank it for just a second with the starter. If the crawler tries to move forward, it is correct.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me on my crawler. I got it started today. And the sad thing is all I had to do was open the throttle HAHAHA.
Been so long I forgot which way it went. Now to grease it up and put it all back together. Thanks to all, I couldn't have done it without all your help. :i

Hello folks
Now I have another problems. The lift cylinder threaded end is stripped and looks like it was welded at one time. Now my question is do I weld it back or replace the shaft, and how much of a job would that be?

It would help to know what blade and what the cylinder you have is. If it is one of the John Deere tie rod cylinders the rod end that attaches to the blade can be welded. I have seen a number that way, including the 430 with a 62 blade I had. There is a threaded end with a nut holding the piston on end of the rod inside the cylinder, so it can still be serviced with the outside rod end welded on.
