Dry in the head

Post by Swanybawanie » Tue Aug 17, 2021 6:22 pm

Hello friends, been a while since I’ve been here, had congestive heart failure, lots of dr. Appointments and hospital visits, have had a great friend helped me with my electrical problems on my 440IC dozer, hats off to Mr. Jim Bonn with his wealth of knowledge with my John Deere dozer, couldn’t have done it without his help, showing me step by step, thank you Mr. Bonn.
Got my dozer running folks! I have some little problems, question, Is the head suppose to be dry? Should have some oil squirting out right? If you want to know the oil pressure the Oil pressure is high. The oil gauge is hooked straight below the oil filter cover. There is a hole left of the oil filter that has spewed oil out when running, I put a cap there for now, and couldn’t find any info about that hole. There’s another hole far right that is capped also. Does the head gets an external oil feed to it?

I don't have a 2 cylinder to look at anymore, but if I remember right there was a about a 1/4" line from of the block, kind of behind the filter, to the back of the head. Likely went in the hole you plugged. Some should be along to say for certain.

On my 40 and 420 there's an oil line from behind the oil filter to the head.

Yes there should be oil in the head... On my "58" 420 c there is a small oil line on the rear top of the engine block going to the head which supplies oil to the head!

EDIT...actually feeds from the flange for the bell housing

dtoots1 is correct, the line comes off the bell housing and goes up to the head. It's the same on my 40 and 420. Tooks pictures but can't post them here.
Can you send pictures in a PM?

The hole that is "far right" is probably for the sending unit for the hour meter. It was an option so if you don't have it the hole would just have a plug in it.

The head is lubed from a vertical port at the back of the block, it would be directly above the camshaft, and has a small line that goes in a port on the right rear of the head. Any else is a modification and is not factory.
