Regulator Grounding
Regulator Grounding
Hi,
Does the voltage regulator on my JD 40 tractor need to be grounded? I can't see where it mentions anywhere if it does or doesn't need grounding. Mine is just setting there behind the instrument panel, with the wires holding it in place.
Thanks, Pete

Re: Regulator Grounding
Some had a ground strap that lined up with a mount bolt, some had a separate wire. Either way it should be mounted (usually two to four screws or bolts depending on the regulator mounting tabs), it shouldn't be just hanging on the wires. The parts catalog shows the original with a ground lead (item key#12).

Re: Regulator Grounding
Regulator should be bolted solid, not hanging by the wires, I would fix that first.

Re: Regulator Grounding
Thanks for the info everyone. I kind of though it must be grounded somehow, because the DelcoRemy circuit diagram show one end of the shunt coils going to ground.
I'd like to remove it to bring with the generator to be setup, but I can't get the steering wheel off. I tried with a puller, and then a slide hammer, but nothing. I keep putting Kroil on it hoping it would help. Did know if I should heat it with the torches or not, didn't really want to ruin anything.
The only other option is removing the battery box and gas tank to get it out that way.
Thanks, Pete

Re: Regulator Grounding
Pull the dash plate is much easier than the steering and tank.

Re: Regulator Grounding
I know it's easier to remove the dash plate, but I can't get that pulled out far enough
until I get the stuck steering wheel off. I saw a video of using a bearing puller to remove
the steering wheel. I picked one up yesterday, and I will try that today.

Re: Regulator Grounding
Heat the hub of the steering wheel with an acetylene torch, then hit on the back side with an air hammer, it should come off.

Re: Regulator Grounding
Thanks Lavoy, I didn't think of using my air hammer. Came off in about a minute with no heat. Previous owners put some good dent on the hub trying to remove it. I tried a 3 jaw puller and a 5 lb slide hammer and it didn't budge.
My next trip to Harbor Freight I'm returning the bearing puller that I bought yesterday. Opened it up to see if it would fit behind the hub, and it did. Didn't try it because I had another project to do.
Thanks again Lavoy, and everyone else that posted.
