Head Bolts

Post by Jimmy in NC » Mon Jan 15, 2007 9:46 am

The age old to reuse or not on these head bolts for the 420. Anyone have any suggestions... or has anyone priced them lately at Mother Deere?

You should have no trouble with the old ones. Clean the threads up will, and I have been running a tap in the holes in the block as well.

While we're on the topic, how do you feel about reusing the connecting rod bolts? Reason I ask is there was a recent post about a new connecting rod bolt failing in a 450 with resulting thrown rod and I know there's a bunch of junk hardware getting into the parts systems (big problem in airplane parts).

Check with your engine guys and see what they think. I personally do it on all two cylinders, and probably would on a 1010/2010. Given what I have heard, I may not do it on a 450, but not sure that that is necessarily what caused tje problem.
