420c steering to the right...
420c steering to the right...
Hi folks just got my 420c back going with new steering clutch discs and it wants to track to the right pretty aggressivly. I have the clutches adjusted really close. What is going on here?
Re: 420c steering to the right...
Have you aligned the tracks as covered in the service manual?
Re: 420c steering to the right...
Have you counted the track pads on each side to confirm the same number of links from left to right?
Re: 420c steering to the right...
Have you pulled the left lever back enough to disengage the left clutch, but not far enough to apply the left brake? This will verify if the right side is driving at all.
Re: 420c steering to the right...
No I have not aligned the tracks or counted track pads. However I do know it drove very straight before I replaced some steering clutch parts. And yes it steers either way when I pull the levers back. Its almost seems to drag on one side but the brake band is loose.
Re: 420c steering to the right...
Is it dragging on one side or possibly slipping on the other? Might want to check the other side!

Re: 420c steering to the right...
If it does not steer straight there are three possibilities: 1) A clutch is slipping (Do both tracks spin under load?); 2) BOTH tracks are misaligned in the same direction (possible if you loosened the track.) or; 3) The pins and bushings are worn more on one side. The "differential" drives both sides the same and the same number of teeth pass on the sprocket unless one side slips. The "pitch" of the rails (chain) affects how much distance the track moves per pad and wear can increase the pitch, affecting that side in distance but not in number of pads.

Re: 420c steering to the right...
Thanks you all So I decided to take it out for a spin aways this afternoon and it seems to do a lot better... Dont know what caused it in the first place... However I am getting a little slippage on the left side. probably needs adjusted. A question though... is the through oput bearing adjustment supposed to be all the way out to the very end of the slot when adjusted propperly? (Open end of slot)
Re: 420c steering to the right...
With the lever back about 1 3/8 inches, the throw out bearing should just touch the clutch fingers.
Re: 420c steering to the right...
Right I undertand that. That wasnt my question.
Re: 420c steering to the right...
I would think that if it's adjusted correctly, it shouldn't matter where in the slot it is.

Re: 420c steering to the right...
I have a 40c that ended up with the adjustment bolt almost to the end of the slot when adjusted correctly as well. Probably just a result of accumulated wear in the various working parts. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it is adjusted by the book and works properly. Other opinions may vary.

Re: 420c steering to the right...
My thought is that the throwout bearing carrier at the outer end of it's travel means you have maximum available adjustment available in the future. As things wear the carrier/bearing will move deeper into the slot during adjustments, as the clutch discs get thinner and the pressure plate fingers get higher.

Ah makes sense! I was thinking reverse of that and thought maybe I had something wrong. Thanks guys you all are great help!

E.Huffman,
my 440c bearing with the new clutch pack from Lavoy, also runs to the end of the slot..actually have to have the flat washer on it to catch and hold the end of the slot...right steering...not replaced and it too is at end of slot...so appears JimB and others would be on target.
and YES taking unit for a ride is god idea as movement probably realigns all the connections!!!
take care and enjoy your ride
