I am looking at buying a 440. Not familier with the tractor I have only seen pics, but the pics look like a really nice dozer. It is gas and has a straight blade with a winch.
What is the going price for a decent one?
Also what is the approx. weight of this machine?

The guy selling it wants $1000, but says it was making a noise in the rear when he parked it. I'm guessing in the final drive area. Just curious on everyone's take on this?

If the tractor was parked b/c of the noise.. be prepared to spend a little money. I haven't found anything that was too terribly difficult on the 420 I am working on.. just a bit heavy sometimes and can be a little expensive.

Other things I would look at is the condition of the undercarriage. That is going to be the most expensive item to get right. Take a gander at the drive sprockets and the amount of the tensioner that is left. While not a good way to judge the amount of wear on the chains.. it is a good guess.

For $1,000.00 I don't think you can do too bad .... if it turns out to be more than you want to get into.. it could easily be parted out for that much.

If you don't mind the work, and want to do one, that sounds like a good candidate. If nothing else, it would be a good donor of you found another one needing some parts.

1000 is not a bad price. its worth that in parts. Rearends are easy just heavy and $$$ to work on. kip in NY

I have a 1960 440IC with 602 blade and I would not trade/sell it for anything else. Its just the right size for doing odd jobs around the farm and has more weight/power than the M, 40, 420 and 430. They are also the last of these models to have the 2 cylinder engine, after the 440 they went to the 4 cylinder engines. Just make sure if you decide to purchase to also get a set of manuals (service, parts, operators) and remember this web site for additional help/questions and parts.
