Master pins

Not really the pin, the clip is the problem.

What tool do you use to expand the clip? Where are they available? I have not been able to find anything that looks like it would work.

I manufactured a tool (modified a battery terminal pliers) to put one on but it was marginally usable.

I was able to start it off with a small punch to one end, then get a screwdriver under it to pry it off. Keep a pair of needle nose pliers on it for when it tries to take off.‎

Most any parts store should be able to get you flat nose lock ring pliers, which should work. Some part numbers are Armstrong # 67-555, NAPA # SER2534, Gear Wrench # 2534D, O'Reilly #88001.

Thanks, ordered one. All my searching for one came down to knowing what to ask for . All I was finding were the pin type.

A boss I had called them pushing pliers. All he had ever used them for was pushing hose ends off of nipples. There were no large external snap rings in the aircraft we worked on and he didn't venture into working on equipment.
I recommend pliers which are built with parallel jaw action. I have fewer problems with the sap ring flying away with them than when using the scissor action pliers.

An older friend of mine used to call the snap rings "oh sh*t" washers from his usual expression when one would go flying off on it's own, never to be seen again

my pins are cone shaped where the rings go on, i used socket that fits over pin and push/hammer them to groove...is not slamming cause pins hold pretty solid

Both take off and install.
