Good point...suppose a NEW solenoid...could have issues from electrical problems...stuck would certainly do it.

Hi,

I am reading all this. But I do not recall any details of the starter used on the Detroit.

I am guessing that wear between the shaft and the gear is allowing the gear to bind on the shaft and preventing it from sliding back.

My question relates to the solenoid itself....it too has a plunger..if that sticks, i assume that would keep starter energized and keep it turning...which was the original problem...when tested off engine..there appeared not to be problem....why would it have problem when installed?

something shorting?

change solenoid and test again...since cannot get to testing technician to have starter tested properly

Hi,

I doubt it is a short. Shorts equal smoke. I doubt it is the solenoid or it would do the same on the bench. That doesn't put a mechanical load on the gear though. If there is too much play between the gear and the starter shaft, the load of turning the engine will bind the gear and not allow it to slide back when the electrical power is removed from the solenoid. It can continue to stick after the engine starts as well.

If this is the style I think it is, the power goes to the solenoid which moves to mate the pinion gear to the ring gear of the engine. At that point a set of contacts powers the starter. When the power to the solenoid is removed, the gear is pushed back by a spring. But that force is pretty weak and if there is too much play between the gear and the starter shaft, it will bind. And then it can't slide back and that set of contacts remain engaged and the starter keeps operating.

And the fact it is fine on the test bed but not on the engine leads me to think this is what is going on.

But, I don't recall the specifics of this starter. There is another style where a plate moves toward the starter core under the solenoid cover and that can have its own manner of binding and sticking.

Then the only answer is to be able to get starter to testing station for proper determination, assuming that everything else suggested does not produce desired results....

Still waiting to hear if any progress or changes with the suggestions...
