button head grease gun couplers

Post by Bret4207 » Fri Jun 03, 2022 7:00 am

Anyone care to recommend a good coupler for the button head fittings on my 1010? The one I got from my Deere dealer is too big to fit some fittings. Before I take the lathe to it, I thought I might see if there's a pre-made alternative someone knows for sure will work.

Button head fittings come in different sizes. Don't recall exactly but believe they should be 5/8" on your 1010. Alemite brand comes to mind and should be available at auto parts stores, particularly in rural areas.

I believe Lavoy has said before that he stocks them and the fittings.

I have used the Deere one, never had a problem, so not sure what could be the issue.

Sounds like you might have a mix of sizes. Someone replaced a few but not all.

Hi,

Only place on my 420c and 350C where it won't go on are the upper idlers. And that is by design. Because you have to remove a bolt to vent it. So they have these ridges to ensure you remove that bolt. Every other fitting works if I slide it on from the proper direction.

I have never had a 1010 but can't imagine there is something different

Stan.

That's the problem Stan- the upper idler. I have no bolt to remove, the face is just too big to slide into the cast boss and fit.

Lavoy, I got what the local dealer had, I'm not sure it's meant for the 1010, could be for a 450 for all I know.

There has to be bolt to remove, that is what holds the cap on.

Hi,

Perhaps the bolt is packed with dirt and grease and you just can't see it. The grease gun head and the idler cap are made so you can't get it onto the button unless you first remove that one bolt. It has to be removed to provide a vent or pumping in grease will blow out the seal.

So machining the grease gun head to force a fit will cause problems.

Okay, now I understand what you mean. I thought you meant there was a bolt in place of the button head fitting. The particular coupler I've got still won't fit the slot between the bosses. I'm going to have to chuck it up and cut some relief into the coupler.

Thanks.
