440ICD steering clutch problem

Post by George by Geneva » Thu Jun 23, 2022 7:13 am

I am working on a 440c, sn453515, steering clutch. I took this apart 10, maybe 12 years ago and got the pinion gear that I needed so finally got serious about putting it together. Bought new discs back about 2012. Put it all together and I see there is about 3/16 in of travel for the clutch throw out fingers. I checked thickness of discs and get 0.160 in thick. Spec is 0.145-0.150. I got these discs at local JD dealer, package is labeled A&I, looks like date code 1107 and from the land of almost right.

So the question: Is there a problem? Were the parts made wrong? Or is this normal and it will wear in? I sure do not want to have to go back and open this up again. I'm too old now to do this for fun. My gut says something is not right.

Since this is my first time here, I do not know about posting pix but I do have some. Thanks

Number one...do you have the gauge used to set the clutch and did you??
Nuber two...follow each step of the procedure in order per the book...

Ihad similar problem on my 440...the locking nut on my throughout bearing had to have a washer on it so that it could ride right on the very edge of the lip to get close enough to engage properly..believethe first setting is moving the lever back like inch to inch and a half off the floor location...that would be about 5.5 to 6 inches atop handle back from the dash. then follow each procedure in the book.

you sometimes have to reset them several times as 60 years of wear in them..
