new to me 1959 440 ic

Post by Pat Wood » Tue Jul 05, 2022 8:18 am

Hi All

I would like to change all fluids while waiting for those manuals.

Am I correct in thinking that the hydraulics and transmission use the same type of oil, like the n series tractors?

What bout the motor? 15 -40 ?
The final drives 90 gear lube?

Where can I get an oil filter?

Sorry for all the questions.

I have done an exhaustive search on the internet but come away more confused that anything>

Also, this is a 4 speed

Hyd is plain hyd fluid, not a common systems fluid like HyGard.
Trans and finals are 90wt.
Engine is any good quality multi or straight weight, 5W-30, etc.
I have filters on hand.

I used aw32 or aw36 in my jd440ic when i had it....Book actually calls for 10 weight and Ma Deeres usually have it...

EDIT...and don't forget to keep Sea Foam in it and in your oils and fuel tank...they tend to get milky from water in all of then....can literally freeze in winter

So the hydraulics is in one fill tanks and the transmission filled in a different tank?

OK where is the rock shaft?

and how do you change the oil?

That may be a dumb question for most but I have never had a dozer

Yes hydraulics are in separate tank...mine was located near right foot in front of the dashboard? kinda offside the battery
Engine oil is drained from underneath the engine, there is hole in the front belly pan to pull the plug.
Tranny also has a drain plug underneath the tranny, can't recall but seems a filter is off to the right side behind a small odd shaped plate...or that may have been on a 2010 i worked on.
Cant remember proper name of pans under each steering brake , but those also need to be changed and drained...the lower plug is for draining and upper plug for checking and filling...uses same as tranny if i recall.....edit...finals

You really need a manual and read all info, if you do not have one...try contacting Lavoy Wilcox owner of this site for one and any parts you may need...

Rock shaft as I think of that term relates to a 3-point hitch. I am going to say if you don't have three point -- you don't have a rock shaft.

I may well be wrong, but I didn't think the 440IC had a transmission filter or cleanable screen. (2010 had the transmission filter)

Hydraulic oil is in a tank. The transmission oil is in the transmission case, not separate tank.

The reverser oil, I believe you are posting on YT as well about your crawler, is in the reverser case (no filter).

As dtoots1 posted the oil for each final drive is in the crescent shaped pans at the bottom of the final drive housings.

You can use this link go to the online parts catalog for your crawler on the JDParts website. 440IC Crawler Parts Catalog PC573

Is your crawler a bare tractor, dozer, or loader? What did you order for manuals?

Generally, the most lubrication info is found in the Owner/Operator manual, not the service manual, at least with the JD manuals for my JD crawlers and wheel tractors. The writers expected the owner/operator to perform the normal lube operations and services.

OK some additional info...I am small wt at 150lbs...underneath is a tite fit...especially if your are 180lb or more, so suggest you drive up on either railroad ties or at least 2 2x8s or larger about 8ft long directly under each of the tracks...wlll take a least a 4 or 5 gallon bucket to drain.

If you have dozer blade...it also should be blocked up to gain access...with solid wooden blocks also..

also add your location to your profile...access is in drp down box where you login
