Hello,
I have a JD 831 track loader which is built on the 440 ICD frame. I have had some power issues with it recently (being sluggish) and went through the fuel system and replaced all the hoses and the filter. I found a rock in the fuel shut off valve so I thought that was it.
I was using it today and when it was under load and digging all the sudden a big puff of white/grey smoke came out from under the hood. I shut the machine off immediately.
Does anyone know what this means? Did I just blow my engine?
Thanks for the help

Re: 440 ICD engine help
Okay now....looks like we are having to assume....
#1...appears that you May have a 3 cylinder diesel that is puffing white exhaust.
#2...has the coolant level dropped so as to be noticeable?
#3...any other symptoms....water in oil..milky looking?
#4...odd engine noises???

Re: 440 ICD engine help
To clarify you have a 440ICD (2-53 GMC diesel) crawler equipped with a John Deere 831 loader attachment, not an 831 track loader. You say it was underload when this happened. Did you lug it down enough to stall it? I have known of old "jimmies" stalling when under load and starting/running backwards when the load was released letting the engine kick back. That would put smoke out the intake. Have you checked the fluids and tried starting it since this occurred?
