Post by Canuck 420c » Mon Aug 01, 2022 6:26 pm

Would anybody here know what the reason was for John Deere painting the series one tractors darker green with no strip along the hood like the rest of the 20 series tractors of that model year? and why did they use the nose badge from the first numbered series tractors on those first 420 series tractors?.I have not see much info out their about this anybody know?

Hi,

They were not a darker green. It just fades darker over time. The stripe came later, during the 20 series run. And it fades to white.

The stripe is not paint. It's ink because they screenprinted it on. So are the letters and the 420 numbers. That made for quick drying. Screenprint the stripe, dry it in a few minutes, screenprint the letters and numbers, dry those and mount the tin soon after.

The Deere logo changed in 1956 to the simpler 4-legged deer and then again in 1968 to the even simpler 2-legged deer.

The early 420's were very similar to the model 40 from what I can see. My guess is they didn't do a complete retool going from 40 to 420, it was more of a transition.
