Post by dtoots1 » Sat Oct 29, 2022 10:06 am

Well folks am considering getting into a 440icd...owner not able to get it started...says was refurbished a while ago, but he bought it like that got it home and cannot start it.

1st question i have is..how do you check compression...not sure sure if thru glow plugs or injectors???

2nd..i know if injectors not getting fuel thru generally is problem for not starting.

Is loader so will be issues getting into..etc..

sold my 440ic and now of course i miss it!! LAVOY, how is that coming along???

thanks

No glow plugs, and unit injectors, so difficult to check compression without correct adapters.
It's a Detroit, spin it over, see if you have smoke, if so, it will go. The 53 series are hard starters even in warmer weather. I would check fuel system first.
Yours is in the shop right now doing some work for the customer.

Everything Lavoy said.
The recommended compression test by Detroit Diesel and in the John Deere manual is a engine running compressing test with the adapter in the injector hole.
If the engine you are trying to start has a block heater, plug it in for and hour or so. If not put a space heater blowing on the engine blowing toward the blower and back towards the air cleaner.
On any diesel but especially a low compression Detroit engine cranking speed is very important. A good battery good starter clean connections are a must. A big battery charger with a boost setting will help.
