So i am restoring a 440 wheel tractor and have it down to the bare bones , i popped trans cover off to replace shift lever and found a moderate ammount of rust and debris on the top gear cluster . This thing sat outside for numerous years .
Has anyone had luck with a wire brush and cleaners or acid or any other ideas ?

440 transmission rust
Re: 440 transmission rust
Well I wound up getting most all of the rust removed and flushed out of housing .
Now on to removing shift lever out of cover , how is a guy supposed to remove that stubborn pin ? Any tricks out there ...

Re: 440 transmission rust
The pin is not the retainer if that is what you are assuming. The snap ring holds the "bearing" in place, which holds the shifter in place.

Re: 440 transmission rust
Thanks
I managed to tap the shifter out from the inside of plate , 60 years of scale rust it was hard to figure out how it was put together .
But there is no bearing as manual shows and clip was found what was left of it .

Re: 440 transmission rust
I should have bearing kit on hand.
