1010C front idler shaft and carrier

Post by audiman21 » Sun Dec 11, 2022 10:37 am

We have a 1010C (SN 40773) we have used for over 40yrs at our property in central Washington for dragging logs and plowing snow. Has been an amazing machine for what we use it for. Unfortunately my father (65yrs old now) and I are the only mechanically inclined persons in the family that can maintain this equipment. My cousins have managed to destroy this thing in my absence (work travel). I have been in contact with Lavoy about a NOS front idler shaft and the front carrier pieces are available on Ebay and/or Lavoy possibly. I am off on a repair and my father sent me some pics of the carnage. Besides the missing bolt on the idler shaft carrier (which allowed the carrier to walk/machine the end of the idler shaft), the adjuster rail is trashed. Is this thing even worth rescuing? It has a lot of sentimental value to the family and I have already told everyone it's out of operation permanently... I am hoping I can just replace the idler shaft carrier, but am not sure if there is a bushing or bearing inside the carrier. I would guess I need a carrier, idler shaft and bushing/bearing if applicable.
Last question. I can't find a parts illustration of the front idler wheel setup. Going off of pictures from my father is not much help. Is this shaft pressed in to the front idler sprocket? Does it float? Assuming I jack and crib the crawler, split the track and remove the idler sprocket and shaft..
Thanks for your help. Glad I found this forum.

Welcome to the Board.

Here are my thoughts, the other guys will likely have other suggestions as well.

It comes down to condition of the rest of the machine to me. If it is in reasonably good shape and you are satisfied with it in general, from your pictures I don't see anything that can't be overcome. With Lavoy helping on the parts, or leads to some if he doesn't have them, and some welding you should be good to go again. I would talk to a machine/ fab shop about having a piece of good grade plate bent to replace the section of adjuster rail that is worn away. You would need to make them a template of the shape from a good area (like right next to the plate that ties the top and bottom flanges together). Bend the top rail and make the patch go down to within a 1" to 1-1/2" of the bottom rail (that would allow room to add a reinforcing plate, below the slide bracket area, if you need. I believe leaving some of the web and the lower flange of the rail will help strength and alignment over a straight vertical cut and replace the entire end of the rail, others may disagree, no problem.). Cut out the bad area, properly prepare/bevel the frame and patch, and weld the patch in. Do it with the idler out so you can back grind to get 100% weld, with 70 series rod/wire, by working from both sides of the repair. Another option would be to cut off and replace the entire end of that side frame. Or replace the whole side frame, if you can find a salvage 1010 with a decent frame or section. Plan on at least building up and reshaping the rail and bracket on the inboard side of the idler as well while you have it apart.

As for the idler and brackets, the idler has bushings in it and turns on the shaft, the shaft is not pressed into the idler. The shaft is supposed be held from turning by the brackets. The rail slide area and the shaft hole, of the brackets could be built up and machined if new or good used can't be found.

If you don't have Operator's and Service manuals for your machine you should talk to Lavoy about getting a set. You might want a printed parts catalog as well, if you don't like using the one online.

Here is a link to the online 1010 Crawler JD parts catalog so you can see the parts breakdown for your entire crawler. You can print pages from it as well. The blade with be in a different parts catalog as during those years they separated attachments.
Good Luck, keep us posted.
