If you put the head gasket in dry, that is often an issue. Use one of the copper sprays, or Hylomar.

Did you have the head or block planed?
I have a running 430/440 engine, but won't have it out til summer.

Well Guys and Gals,

We continue with this recalcitrant booger....number one cylinder is cracked...so will get shop to put sleeve in it....once they go thru everything else to see what else.....

NOw when i pulled engine...my entire long driveshaft pulled out...left the spring in the sleeve...so i gets my long handled magnet out,..dang thing locks on the sleeve and pulls it out....loosing the spring down the drop at tranny end of the center housing...where you cannot reach it with the magnet...i put a long cotter pin in the sleeve...with neverseize on it and the sleeve...which apparently spun right out while i had dang thing running so i now will have to remove the center housing enough to get my spring back as well as put the cotter key in with the end bent to prevent spin out...of course the dang fuel tank has fuel in it and that must be taken care of as well...by the way...that sleeve actually only goes on the splines one way...otherwise the pin holes will not match up thru...so again has to be visible to get that lined up as well...of course to do that...the clutch cage must be disconnected from the long clutch rod...so i can even pull the housing forward to get into the back end of it...also wonder what i have to do for the danged dashboard....will that have to come off???? not sure how much room before crossmember of the front loader cause problem??? also, believe my dang footrests will need out to get to housing/tranny nuts..maybe..

well getting educated!!!!!

You are really getting to know your machine. Smile, this at least keeps you from roaming the streets.

Well Folks,

Yup was able to leave fuel tank, dashboard etc. on center housing and move it out enough to locate my spring and cotter key...hooked sleeve and cotter key and bent it over...now it cant spin out....Used my engine hoist...had to put trailer hitch in end of lift to extend enough to get close to balance the center housing...and that was right at crossmember of front loader as well as the jack itself at the front crossmember.

Interesting note....Dang dashboard has enough overhang so cannot get but short movement to get that top left nut loose very well...takes a 15/16 open or box end....would you folks believe that the demolished tool box still had a 15/16 rusted beyond...as a donater? i had put it away with my full set....had to cut it in half to use to get that one nut loosened to get center housing out enough...now to get brake rods connected back to the pedals and bell housing bolts back thru the side panels and lined up..also needs the throw-out cage back in place as that had to be loosened to get the shaft sleeve out that magnet dragged to the front. Another thing i need figure out is.. How to set the cage close to get set up for the freeplay I will need in the clutch pedal.?

A side note..now it looks like it wants another paint job!!!...nope it will simply be a working machine...once get engine back..Sure do hope hydraulics work

Just a note to add..

The 4 large bolts that hold the bell housing to the side flanges....are really a P.I.A. to get all of them lined up...the 2 top ones with the centering washers really need installed first....with the centering flange inside the hole and the 4 back at tranny need loosened just a bit for movement...mine is center housing as i do NOT have reverser...not sure how they line up when having a reverser.

First time i did them I was able to tap them into the holes with a hammer....this time it was really much harder to get them going...I actually used an air hammer on the one...the other i tapped it couple times with hammer and it got started... after i had the other (right side from front) in and snugged up.

And so it goes....wait for engine now

Main bearings have not been available for almost 2 years. To the best of my knowledge, Clevite has discontinued them, and will no longer be manufacturing them.
