Hi dtoots1,

Looks like you have a good base for a fun project there. It appears the spokes on the idler got some weld repair at some point. My 430C dozer had a couple spokes welded on its idlers. They were old repairs when my father-in-law got it and they never bothered in the 40 plus years it was here. I can see a loader having them crack from loading and impact. Check them over for cracks but I don't think they will give you a problem.

Keep us posted on the progress of getting the engine running.
Jim

At least yours is all together. I bought one that was taken apart and left out in the weather for a couple of years. It's in my shed now on several pallets. I hope to get at it next year.

The front idler on your 420 has had a lot of repair work done to it. If you are worried about it holding up you could reinforce it like the the one in the picture below. It has had plates welded to both sides between the spokes. The other pictures are the front idler on the other side.
This one will get plated before doing much work in the spring. I hadn’t seen the cracks until today.

i do have another set of them that are not cracked and set of dozer shoes, track and chain, in case want to change. looks like i may be digging bit deeper....my rebuilt 6 volt starter with clean contacts just bumps my fan blade a bit....i have my old 40s wheeled that i pulled the rod cap off and checked that number 2 cyl was free and then was able to use air to get number one freed up...which i will probably do with this ..but that gonna take getting belly pan off and old oils out of engine...so torpedo heater n oil and drain

nice technique on fixing them idlers...mine don't show any cracks, as yet and every spoke is welded..and loks like every hose need replaced..foot brake locked or frozen and left steering brake feels unattached...also need a seat base and seat

Re: jd420 pics..and antifreeze in oil

Post by dtoots1 » Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:28 am

Well bad news...probably gallon or so antifreeze in the oil..and know my #1 exhaust valve leaking...so head comes off and see what else going on....suspect may be overheated..and warped...

Will that itself put the antifreeze in oil pan?...or something deeper in these old 420s?

Once i get head off maybe see? Pull bottom plate to get to oil pan and see what underneath inside...blew belt on air compressor so lost that for now...cant push on the cylinder to get loose that way...so pull apart and see what gives. Hope not cracked block etc will see

Re: jd420 pics...reverser?

Post by dtoots1 » Sat Feb 04, 2023 1:13 pm

Hey Lavoy and any gents out there know...

My 420 is late 58 model...i do not see any reverser handle??? Looks like the long straight box would be the reverser between engine and tranny,,,,my clutch and brake pedals are locked solid....assume are rusted tight.....where would the reverser handle be located...my laptop is back up at the job with my downloaded manual...so cannot look it up..water pump appears to be ok....belt was rusted to pulley....that is a job with the dang pump put front like that...just about every dang thing out front has to come off...
now am wondering if i can pull engine with engine hoist with the blamed front loader on this thing...from the side???

will see

The gear type reverser handle (long) is on the right side ahead of the dash. The newer wet clutch type would have a handle on the left, similar to your 440IC reverser, I believe. Check your email for a picture showing the gear type handle.

You might get it pulled from the side, but side pulls don't work good on engine hoists and the best you could do from the side would be a quartering pull. It depends on the reach of your engine hoist, but I am thinking you might do better from the front if you can get the bucket off and out of the way.

I pulled the head off of a Cat loader from the side. I shortened the legs all I could and extended the boom all I could. Put about 500 lbs of lead on the back for a counter wt. Wasn't sure the boom could stand it, but we made it.

My concern would be the side load it would put on the hoist trying to pull an engine which needs to move forward to get of the shaft to the transmission, vs lifting a head which would need minimal if any forward movement to remove. The side load could cause the hoist to tip or fail.

Raise the loader all the way up, lock it with an angle iron on the ram, and youwioo have room from the front.
