440 clutch and pressure plate problems

Post by Hambrick28 » Wed Feb 08, 2023 9:44 am

Ok so I'm convinced that I'm making this harder than it needs to be, however I would like to know that I'm on the right page before I put the tracks back on. So, the problem I'm having is when I disassembled the finals and put all new seals and bearings in one side had 8 fibers and 8 steels the other side had 7 and 7 so I ordered 8 and 8 to put back in. The problem I'm having is with 8&8 I can’t get the fingers to adjust far enough to touch the clutch tool. The brake drums I have are the style that they are all one piece the bolts don't go all the way through. Also, I tried it with the amount the manual states and it doesn't appear to be enough clutch fibers and steels. So, I have successfully had the finals off and on a lot at this point and I'm second guessing myself, any help will be appreciated.

According to the parts book a crawler with serial number below 455633 has seven fiber and 6 steel, those 455633 and above have eight and eight.

The problem I'm having is that you can not read the serial number on the machine.

And a further possibility to consider...perhaps the one side was the original and only required the lesser number with the other side (final) having been replaced with the newer version?
The next question...was the lesser count side working properly before you changed he count?

These little jewels are very temperamental in getting the proper adjustments...My 440ic needed to be adjusted numerous times when i replaced clutch p.p. carrier fibres and steels...with same number that was in...

the throw-out on the carrier tube pivot...had to be placed literally at the lip of the grove -with the washer under the bolt head tightened sufficiently to hold it in position.

Then follow the manual thru each step...test and do again..

While you have it up in air you can run thru the entire proceedure and then test on ground

Be sure and have solid blocking...not cement blocks!!

Sorry for no response I have them all back together but I have been delayed on the project. Had some personal business come up and had to deal with that. With that being said I’ve also run into some part’s issues, specifically the front idler’s, I thought mine were fine but they are not so just another set back. I have been able to get all new bottom rollers on the machine and make new rock guards. So if I can get the idler’s figured out (I need 2 idler wheels) I should have this thing up and going soon.
