injector service for DD 35's
has anyone sent their injectors in for service? where to? and at what cost?
440icd/602/8a,,440icd/831/ripper,,440icd/831/3pt.,misc. 440 parts, i have 5 of these now, but i can stop anytime

local shop here has told me that they can change my injectors for about $150 each.
from S series to N series is what I think he said,
I dont know whats involved in that but will find out the details soon enough.
and on another related subject;
I read there are 2 different cylinder sleeves,
that being the N and S series which can be changed too, and probably pistons too,
who knows,,,, really, who knows? (enlighten me)
I have not found any local mechanics that knows enough about the 2-53, obviously a dying lot.
my old dead uncle was a lifelong mechanic for JD, he knew more than I could absorb.
2-53's were just not popular around this territory.

N series is an upgrade from the S. Supposed to run a little stronger, less smoke and easier starting. I don't know exactly but expect they bumped the compression up a bit.
Pistons and sleeves, cam follower springs, and valve springs, along with injectors, were some of the changes. There might have been something around the blower as well. I'm not sure if the injectors used the same timing tool or not. Changing to the N injectors was common and sounds like it might be the only choice now. I haven't had to do anything to Jimmies/Detroits for years, so I could be off on some of this.

N series pistons are about 4 points of compression higher than S series. It makes a HUGE difference in starting, absolutely no comparison. Always put N series or later injectors with the N series pistons. It's not a horsepower issue, it is just the starting. 53 series engines are or can be hard starters, more so at colder temperatures. The N series pistons virtually eliminate this issue.
S series pistons are still available as they would be used in any turbo applications.
