Oil on my steering clutchs

Post by Philt » Mon Jul 10, 2023 2:42 pm

Just bought a 420c 4 roller when I picked it up he said some oil got on the left side steer clutch. Just clean it off with brake clean and should be fine. It wouldn’t steer on the right side. So I cleaned it up. I let it sit for a week. Then when I unloaded it from my trailer it had new oil in there. I had cleared it all out before.
So I’m not sure where it could be coming from my suspicion is from the tranny. I think there may also be oil in on the right side now. Could it be from the seal from the tranny. Any help would be appreciated.

Either the pinion shaft in the final drive or the carrier seal in the rear end. Oil can not be cleaned from clutch discs, they must be replaced.

Are those seals available and how much are they. Also how much for the clutch discs. I’m not an experienced mechanic but was going to do it myself.

If I’m that deep into it what else should I change like bearings and seals.
Looks like it’s a pretty big job to do it all.
I have the manuals. But not the parts list one.
I hope I can manage it.

Normally keep all the parts on hand, I think I have a parts manual on hand too.

I’m in Canada. What’s the price for the discs. Do I need just the fiber ones or the whole set. I’m new to this so I don’t know too much at the moment but I suspect I’ll be a pro by the end.
The side that got the oil in it didn’t have the final drive pan on so it didn’t have oil in it. So I’m assuming it came from the rear end. Do you have split seals or will I have to take the rear end apart to replace the seal. What the price for the seals or do you have a website. Thanks Phil
