Hydraulic Oil ???

Post by bighamlin » Thu Feb 08, 2007 5:54 pm

I have four JD's, 1960 - 1970, and all call for a different hydraulic oil. My 1010 crawler calls for 10w or 5w-20 and my 2510 & 4020 tractors call for JD special type 303. While my 544 uses both 303 and type C-2, but the manual says not to use 303 in place of the C-2. My question, does anyone know if Hygard, which is what I have been using, will cause any difference in preformance for any of these applications? My Deere dealer says the Hygard is a replacement for all of the above, but I believe I must be sacrificing something with a one oil replacement.

Thanks
Paul

You must run the Hygard or equivalent in the 2510 and 4020. If you run it in the crawler you will lose a little pressure compared to a straight hyd oil, but won't hurt anything.
Not sure on the 544 though, I do not know what C2 is.

Lavoy, Deere makes a low viscosity hygard, would that work better than regular hygard in the crawler? Or, does Deere make a "straight hydraulic oil"?

The C-2 is an oil designation of the Allison transmission, hydraulic steering and brakes on the JD544, the loader cylinders have a seperate resevior and pump for the 303/now hygard.

Thanks
Paul

The low vis Hygard will make it squeal worse, it is enough thinner. It won't hurt anything, but you will lose some more pressure.
Deere does not make a straight hyd oil anymore that I know of. It is not hard to find though, any Farm and Fleet or TSC type store will have it on the shelf. I think the Advance Auto parts store in town even has it.
Talk to your local dealer, they may tell you that the low vis is a substitute for the C2.
