440icd tranny

i found a compleat thranny for my 440 but i would like to know if it will fit for sure.. i know there was to trannys for the 440. the number on his tranny is "M4256T", and is a five speed and has reverser.. ok mine out of my 440 is a 5 speed without reverser and i am told by looking up the serial number that it is the 440 big tranny.. this was told to me by crawler hever.. so will this mans tranny work n my dozzer..??? please help a sap..thanks

If the number on your case is the same as that one, it should be the same. Just because it is a 5 speed means nothing, there are two different 5 speeds, and two different 4 speeds. I commonly refer to them as "big" or "little" transmissions. All diesels, and gas crawlers built after the diesels came out had big transmissions, all prior gassers had the little transmission. The two transmissions will NOT interchange without an extensive amount of work.

ok i cant find my number on my case.. were is it at.. iv looked all over the case but i know it has to be there somewere.. and since the other one has reverser and mine dont does that mean my number will be different then his?

You might have to pull the LH footrest to find the number. Reverser has no effect on the trans.

This thread made me look at my trannys. One has the dip stick to check the tranny level, the other does not. They are both 5 speeds and both are the "big" trannys, 1959 crawlers. Did they make several "big" ones?

i found my number it is a t11396, his is a different number.. does that mean it is older or newer then mine..or is it the small tranny

I have a 440 ICD (1960) the casting number on the side is not real clear, but it appears to be T11396T as well as a parts gas crawler (IC, no serial number) that I have. Both are 5 speeds and have the dipstick on the top. Comparing my late 440 ICD parts book (1966) with my early 440 IC parts book (1958), the ring and pinion have different numbers of teeth. From the drawing in the parts book, the early trans does not appear to have the separate cover plate above the ring gear, no dip stick and has the fill plug on the right side. The books also do not show a difference in the cases for the 4 or 5 speed as long as they are both early or late.

The ICD has the later finals with webbing and the shallow dish sprockets. One final has a different casting number and is noticibly thicker at the top than the other (maybe a 1010 final?) The IC (gas) has the early finals, no webs and fins on the axle bearing cover (it has no sprockets, but comparing to the ICD finals I assume it used the deeper sprockets.) Both dozers have had considerable work done to them and so parts from other dozers may have been used.

I have both in pieces all over my side of the garage with a vintage car behind it, so room is at a premium. Still evaulating what I have, going will be slow for a while due to father-in-law's passing and my wife will be out of town for some time. So I am Mr. Mom right now. Although now is a good time to tear into the trannies and not get complaints about the smell of old gear oil goo!!

thats some good info.. u have the same number on your case as i do on mine.. what im hearing is that it seams he has the samller tranny and mine is the bigger tranny, the guys is for serial numbers 440001-448000 crawlers, and my serial number is 454047. so i have a later crawler.. im needed the ring and pinion for mine but figured that if his would work i could get a compleat tranny with reverser for 450 bucks.. i wish it would work and i couold get off cheap but i gess it wont... i only paid 600dollars for my dozer, and it runs great and tracks are almost new, just needs the ring and pinion,

No small trannys had dipsticks, all big trannys had dipsticks. Double check your serial numbers, big trannies started at 448,001 as did the diesels.

T11396 is the late case, (big) and will not interchange with the M4256T.

thats what my case is, a t11396, and i was told its a big tranny.. his was the M4256T, and im being told it wont work by others also.. just my luck..
