420C front idler size difference
420C front idler size difference
Just started a "time to fix" stuff on my 1957 420C. Front idlers are rough and I acquired a set theoretically off same vintage 420. When I removed mine and placed side by side I noticed a difference. Mine are 21" in diameter and replacements are 19" in diameter. Did JD make different size idlers for the 420? As I have minimal adjustment left ( 1-1 1/2") this could be a problem.
Re: 420C front idler size difference
I believe the 19" were standard and the 21" (oversize) were an option. The larger idlers use one additional pad in the belt.
Re: 420C front idler size difference
Thanks Mike, going to count pads and see where I am at.

4 roller with standard idler uses 31 links per crawler belt
4 roller with oversize idler uses 32 links per crawler belt
5 roller with standard oversized idler uses 35 links per crawler belt

Good- to see another "wisconsinite" with a 420 crawler!!

Re: 420C front idler size difference
Yup,
32 pads, so they are the "optional" ones. Did find something strange on the right ideler, the axel is a two part set up with a "supposed to be" solid inner axel, its snapped in half where there was a pin through it which tied it to the large bore cylinder which rode on the bushings. I have three other front ideler axels which are all one solid machined unit,,,somebody been there? or was this a factory replacement? I think that axel is kinda wierd, if I can figure out how to post a pic will do.
Going to have to rebush everything, when that axel snapped it tore up the entire assembly. Hope Levoy has bushings.
Mike, I up on the MI/WI border, where are you close to?

Re: 420C front idler size difference
I should have bushings on hand, if not, short delay.
