Hello all, new to forum, I have a 440 diesel crawler that I purchased and working on, got some books with it but seems that it was owned by few owners and had a lot of stuff changed or replaced, I have a lot of leaks and I'm sure different/wrong fluids were used, can anyone tell me the correct fluids for all the systems? Much appreciated.
I'm not very good at searching forums for info, I spend a lot of time and never find the info.

Currently a UTHF meeting the John Deere J20C spec in place of the outdated Type A automatic transmission fluid in the reverser. The same UTHF can be used in the hydraulic system.

For engine oil there is a thread on the Early Models board Lavoy poated about the recommended engine oils for the GM Diesels I suggest you read it and make your decision on engine oil from that.

On a housekeeping note, a post like this for your 440ICD should be on the Early Models Board. A moderator may move it over there when they see it.

I am new to tractors or crawlers, seems like there is a lot of different ideas when it comes to fluids and such, so much has changes from the 50's and it very confusing.
Am i ok to use aw32 hyd. Oil in the hyd. System? I was told at tractor supply that it is equiv. To 10w that is recomended in the manual.

Also my transmission was contaminated and looked "milky" am i ok to just put syntetic 75w140 from the store or need to worry about the GL5?

Yes, AW32 is what you want. If you are in warmer climes, you can use AW48 as well.
Yes on the GL5, but flush the trans with diesel or kerosene and get as much moisture out as possible first.

Does your 440 have the reverser (the forward and reverse handle on the left side of the console)? If so that is not gear oil in that. It was originally Type A transmission fluid which is often more difficult to get now and is not the same as the original formulation. I believe JD Hy Gard or another UTHF meeting the JD J20C spec is acceptable now. Lavoy may have another option.

Any of the J20 spec lubes is my preference as well, or Hygard direct from Deere.
