Rebearing bevel gear shaft- 440 ic

Post by gaspumpsam » Sun Mar 03, 2024 12:53 pm

On a 440 ic- 442172 bevel gear bearing quills, does anyone know how thick the original m811t gaskets are. If I knew that, it might save me from removing the side bearings one more time.
I am rebearing the bevel gear assembly( actuall the whole transmission)
Thank you

An update to my request for thickness of gaskets on bevel gear bearing quills. I made my own(.029 thick) will allow that for ea side.
Also when i went to install power shaft ( 5 spd trans ) to set up pre load, found cluster gear would start to seize, removed all gears from this shaft, reinstalled and set preload, then reinstalled with all gears etc, and found gear would jam, but was ok after i installed an extra .013 shims.
Removed shaft and gears, and had machine shop take .025” from shaft where engaging collar slides, the big washers was very hard, shaft was softer, so easier to machine. Should get it back today.
More later.

Update- got the cluster gear for the power shaft back from machinest, after i installed it, i have .015 end play on this gear and .003 preload on shaft bearings. Hoping the end play on gear will allow more oil to get to bearings inside this gear
.
Also i cut little grooves in washer on back side of cluster gear on power shaft, also to allow more oil to bearings in gear.

When setting backlash on bevel gear, found the service manual was a little off on its spec for the amount shims to increase or decrease backlash. I got pretty good at removing and replacing side bearings!!!!

Got steering clutch housings on, now starting on clutches and linkage. Bought a bench model glass blaster, to do linkage parts etc.
I also thought after rebuilding engine and trans ( very expensive) that the rest would be not to expensive- wow, did i get a shock!!! LOL
Someone on here ( maybe Stan ?? ) says- there is no cheap crawler!! Boy is he ever right on !!
Am going to try and put some pics on here of my project ( 440 ic ) will see how that goes. More later.
