JD 2010C W/ 20 Winch

Post by Stretch » Sat Feb 24, 2007 5:38 am

I got my 2010 home yesterday, now the fun begins.
This machine has a JD 20 winch on it. The ring and pinion are turning but the drum does't. There is nothing going to winch but pto. It appears that there should be some hydralic lines(all be it small) going to the winch.
Does anybody know anything about this winch?
What kind of oil should be in the gear case?

Thanks in advance for any info

JD Series 20 Winch

The Series 20 Winch is actuated using a control handle mounted on the left fender. It is a double piston affair that uses brake fluid to operate the clutch and/or release the brake. The gear case takes 90 weight oil.
The winch works fine if used often and a lot, but sitting unused for long periods allows condensation to collect on the internal components which rust up and fail.
My shop manual for the 2010 contains a section on the Series 20 winch. One more reason to get the manual.
Parts are hard to come by for the Series 20. If you really need a winch, try finding one of the newer ones that run in hydraulic oil. They can set for years without problems. Do a search on "winch" in these posts, I think there is a model number posted.
