Reverser in a 440 ICD

Post by steamfitter99 » Wed Feb 28, 2007 5:02 pm

Hello, I have my 440 in for a major teardown and rebuild and was wondering about the reverser. You can tell about the engine clutch and the steering clutches, but will a worn out clutch on the reverser be obvious? Has anyone torn one down and rebuilt on? Thanks, for any help, Tom.

If you are that far in to the crawler, I would take it out and look at it. Often times the reverser gets shifted without using the foot clutch and the tabs on the ends of the reverser discs get beat to death. If they get bad enough, they will eventually peel off and the reverser will quit working.
If you have the service manual, they are not difficult to work on.

Hi,

Just in case you can't visualise it, the reverser clutch packs look like the ones used in motorcycles and automatic transmissions. :)
