Splitting a 40 Crawler

Hi, Long time lurker here. I have searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer and am wondering if anyone can offer some advice. We have a throw out bearing that has come apart and is in pieces in the bell housing. We have the engine split away but the entire input shaft is coming with the engine and not pulling out of the pilot bearing and separating from the engine. Are both ends of the shaft splined? Any tips on removing the shaft from the engine. Pulling the shaft all the way out attached to the engine is not an option due to the blade being in the way. I'll try and get a pic attached if my description is not clear. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance. Doug

Hi,

IIRC, there is a coupler between the shaft in the center frame and the input shaft of the trans. It must be rust welded to the clutch.

Edit: Or is that only on the 420 and the 40 was different? I'll have to go look at the Parts Catalog later today.

Got the propeller shaft out. Looks like there is supposed to be a pin at the back end. Splines look like they are in good shape. Other than the shaft pulling out with the engine next time the clutch is changed, is there any downside to not using a pin in the back end of the shaft?

If the pin is not in place, the shaft is not all the way in position on the input splines, it causes extra wear.
