440ICD will engine still run after?

Post by Purepowder2000 » Tue Mar 13, 2007 12:11 pm

I decided I would try to start my fathers 440icd. It hasn't started in two years. I don't know alot, but have been reading these message boards. I tried to start it yesturday. Then checked the oil and there was alittle water that came out of the oil pan. Did I ruin it by not taking out the water first? Engine turns over good, but did not see any smoke come out from exhaust. How long should it take to normally start engine? Peter from CT.

If it still has the original S series pistons, on a cold day it may never start without ether.
A little bit of water in the pan did not hurt anything cranking it over.

On the blower assembly, there is a small plug which can be removed and you can squirt a SMALL amount of ether into the blower. That should get it to start in the cold weather. Without the ether, you are just wearing down the battery and starter trying to get it to start. It should start quickly with the ether. Just do not get carried away with it, one short spray into the plug hole should work.

drained oil today. A little water in the beginning came out. Friend of mine gave me his manual today, have been reading it like crazy. Learned some tips to start it also. Like draining fuel filter for water. I'm missing the governor linkage. The part that is attached to the throttle rack and is shaped like a C. Does anyone have that or know part #.

The part number for it is 5196105. It is a Detroit Diesel number so you can ask a DD dealer, not sure it is still in production.
The DD 2-53 uses some of the same parts as some of the other engines.
Let us know if they still have it.

The part listed above is actually mounted on the governor and is called; lever, governor throttle speed adjusting shaft. Is that the part you need or the C shaped part that runs thru the side of the head in to the rack? It is 5121240, link, and the rubber boot, that seals the side of the head, is 5121385; boot, governor control link. HTH

Tried to start it today. I turned the screw on the bottom of the fuel filter to let out any water or crap. nothing came out. unscrewed the screw on top and fuel poured out. Tried to start it after , but battery was not fully charged. Was hoping to start it before this big storm. Did see black smoke coming from exhaust, always a good sign. I believe it will start once I charge battery. I will have to take a couple pictures to show you guys exactly what I am missing. will have them on here tomorrow night. I gotta find a Detroit diesel dealer. I love this website. Thanks a lot guys.

I would go ahead and put a new fuel filter in before starting it. That way, you can also find out why nothing came out of the bottom port on the fuel filter cannister. You do not want any foreign matter, water, etc. going in to the injectors.

The snow storm we had this weekend has kept me busy. Here is a picture of what I need, not my tractor though. Someone's on here. Took off fuel filter not sure what happened there, but I will replace filter anyways. [[/img]Image

What you need to do is create yourself a FREE page on "PHOTOBUCKET", post any pictures you want on there, and then select what you want to post here. You can simply click on the "IMG"(3rd one down under the pictures) and then PASTE it in your post.

Go to this web site for PHOTOBUCKET.

Two of the arrows in the picture you posted point to the line and boot I listed the part numbers for previously. You appear to be missing the Rod, governor to injector link (p/n 5121239) and two joint, ball, 1/4" (p/n 5118491) and the jam nuts Nut, hex, 1/4" (p/n 121904). You really nead a parts list PC-609 for the 440ICD. The date on mine is Jan 66, and I believe that was the newest version. HTH
